In Graphical Approach to a Simple Physics Problem and Regression Approach to a Simple Physics Problem I have discussed approaches to solving my daughter’s physics homework. Basically, the problem started with the following data, showing the time to drain water through a hole in a bucket, based on the diameter of the hole and the [...]

In Graphical Approach to a Simple Physics Problem I discussed my daughter’s physics homework. The problem was to determine the relationships between how long it takes water to drain from a hole in the bottom of a bucket, the diameter of this hole, and the initial height of water in the bucket. Given this relationship, [...]

In the Microsoft Charting newsgroup, a reader wanted to show separate lines on a line chart to compare the severity of the medical conditions of different patients after one to five visits. The question was whether it would be possible to resolve the individual patients.
A parallel coordinates chart can show an individual’s condition in front [...]

I know I’ve railed against dial gauges in the past, and I’ve removed instructions for creating a speedometer type chart from my site. But this particular implementation is completely appropriate.

My daughter asked me about her physics homework the other night. The problem was to determine the relationships describing how long it takes water to drain from a hole in the bottom of a bucket given various hole diameters and initial water heights. Given the derived relationships, the student was to determine the time to [...]

Several years ago I helped someone who was having trouble with a fitted trendline in an Excel chart. I saved the example, because I knew I’d have a blog someday, and I’d need a topic. I will use this example to describe a number of errors people encounter when fitting data. The errors are listed [...]
