In Plot your data around the clock, Chandoo proposed a complicated bubble chart to show website traffic vs. time of day.
I thought it was daring of Chandoo to try such a unique treatment of the data, but I found the bubbles difficult to interpret, and it was distracting that I had to look from chart [...]

Chandoo saw a post at Smashing Magazine showing Top 10 creative ways to display time, and he took a crack at duplicating a polar clock using an Excel donut chart. Chandoo did a fine job with his copy of Pixel Breaker’s Polar Clock, though the style itself is tricky to interpret.

A college science professor named Roger Blickensderfer wrote to me about an animation he was working on. He wanted to trace the path followed by a point on the rim of a rolling wheel. Roger had cobbled something together, and I fiddled with it, and it kind of worked. But I decided I wanted it [...]

The Calculating Easter post on John Walkenbach’s new Spreadsheet Page blog got me thinking. He presented a formula for calculating the date of Easter in a given year:
=DOLLAR((”4/”&A2)/7+MOD(19*MOD(A2,19)-7,30)*14%,)*7-6
Chip Pearson’s web site also has a couple formulas for calculating Easter:
=FLOOR(”5/”&DAY(MINUTE(A2/38)/2+56)&”/”&A2,7)-34
=FLOOR(DATE(A2,5,DAY(MINUTE(A2/38)/2+56)),7)-34
Chip also offers a UDF (VBA User Defined Function) which is valid through 2099, but breaks thereafter [...]

My friend Chandoo proposed a chart to show website traffic vs. time of day in Plot your data around the clock [Excel charting idea]. He thought he’d use the analogy of a 12-hour analog chart, and put a bubble at each hour, where the size of the bubble is related to the pageviews during that [...]

Chart Event Class Module to Highlight a Series

In Chart Event to Highlight a Series, I showed how to use a chart legend plus chart events instead of a listbox, to select which series to highlight in a busy multi-series chart. That technique is useful, but it is not versatile: it is applicable only to a chart sheet that has the code in [...]

I’ve posted several times recently (for example, here, here, and here) showing examples that use a listbox to allow the user to highlight a series in a chart. Then I realized that the listbox requires an additional element which is not really integral to the chart. So I thought, why can’t I use a list [...]

In Watch the Rise of Gasoline Retail Prices, 1993 - 2008, Nathan shows an animated bar chart that traces the price of gasoline over the past 15 years. A number of readers responded with links to assorted time series.
I downloaded Nathan’s data workbook and duplicated Nathan’s animated bar chart in Excel in Gas Prices - [...]

We all have been awed and amazed by the Hans Rosling talk Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you’ve ever seen.
The software used by Professor Rosling is Gapminder. There are demos and links to numerous similar presentations on their web site.
I’ve made numerous animated charts in Excel, including Gas Prices - Animated Bar Chart [...]

In the Calculating Easter post on John Walkenbach’s new Spreadsheet Page blog, John presented a bar chart showing the occurrences of the dates of Easter between 1900 and 2199. He sorted his dates in decreasing order of occurrence (below left). In Gradients, Fills, and Shadows, Oh My I proposed sorting in date order (below right).
