I’ve reached a blogging milestone

I’ve reached a milestone of sorts with my blog. I’ve been posting now for about four weeks, and here are my stats (not including this post):

Comments and Spam

When I started, it took a couple of days for people to start finding my blog and responding with comments. The spambots took longer to find the blog, and for a couple weeks I only got one or two spam comments a day. Lately they’ve come in with greater frequency, and today the spam comments have caught up with the real comments.

So far, Akismet has been very effective. It has only let one spam comment through, and it has only trapped one real comment as spam. Let’s keep our fingers crossed, shall we?

Speaking of comments, don’t let the lack of them make you think the VBA/macro stuff you’re posting indicates a lack of interest.

Speaking for the ‘I can bluff my way around my office as an advanced Excel user, but I know I’m not because I can’t do crap with VBA in Excel’ crowd, I can tell you they are very useful.

Thanks for the comments. I’m not too worried about comment traffic yet. It’s still at a manageable volume, half a dozen a day not counting the spam, and that’s filtered out pretty effectively. I have an average of about 4 comments per post, and something like 1/3 of the comments are my responses.

That’s really good for only 1 month at it. Keep up the good work :)

I remember feeling like I was talking to myself in the beginnings (and oftentimes I still do), so the fact that you’re getting comments at all is a good sign.

Nathan - I was already getting lots of traffic to my web site, so probably I got more traffic sooner to the blog, and more comments. I haven’t found a very reliable way yet to monitor actual traffic. FeedBurner gives me an estimate of subscribers’ views, and the regular site stats from my internet host gives me hits for the blog pages. The Google Analytics doesn’t seem to be picking up the traffic, though, so I probably set up the plugin incorrectly.

Nathan -

I have a directory full of downloaded plug-ins marked “Check these out”. One was an older version of the stats plug-in I just downloaded and which I will shortly install. Thanks for the push.

The milestone I was remarking on in this post wasn’t so much a month of blogging. I was more amused that the volume of spam comments had caught up with the regular comments. But surprisingly, regular comments have held their own. The totals now are:

Real comments: 120
Spam comments: 105

And Akismet still has only one false positive and one false negative. Two errors out of 225 chances? Pretty good, I’d say.
